Very good shot Simon, I agree the signals do stand out, I went to Birkett Common yesterday. GC today, in very poor light.

Hi Martyn....Yes my plans changed from going north to see the two Black 5's, not sure if that was the right choice after seeing some amazing work on Flickr. However I did have an enjoyable day meeting some new Flickr members and some friends I had not seen for sometime.I looked out for you but sadly our paths never crossed.Hope the get together went well hope to attend if you plan on another one.
Thanks for all the comments much appreciated.

You were obviously one of the zillions using the GCR lineside pass. Glad to see you took something that could not be shot from 'outside'. Nice angle on an already nice shot. I was aghast Saturday by the amount of people wandering around the track all apparently certificated. However there were an increasing number that seemed to have no clue of safety. Walking with back to traffic, crossing in front of approaching trains, carrying clearly bulky equipment that could easily get caught and standing far too close to traffic. When I did my PTS and other line related safety courses we spent days under instruction and then when on the lineside you were required to have a COSS, or similar, and even a lookout. I fear the GCR attitude is an accident waiting to happen. The NYMR seem to have a far greater sense of safety on these things but then it is run by professional railwaymen.

It also surprises me the amount of 'Lineside" photographers that go to the spots where equally good shooting, and in some cases better, can be had off track and then just get in the way of those not wearing a high viz jacket. Doesn't make much sense and certainly many hav no consideration for those who choose not to be trackside. That said those that act responsibly do produce some stunning images. I only hope that an accident doesn't happen otherwise the HSE will take the GCR apart.

phantomfgr2...I have to say I agree with all what you said.Walking back from Loughbrough towards Quorn I met four other lineside pass holders walking with their backs to the trains.I did have a friendly word warning them of the danger but it fell on deaf ears.Tripods to close to the track was another word in the ear. I too fear that there are now far too many pass holders and on gala days all you can see are hi-viz vests. There was also much trespass yesterday by people who did not have a lineside pass which did not help matters. The GCR is the only line where I have a lineside pass for that do patrol the line on gala days.I know they did ask some members of the public to leave the 'inside' the fence but that is all they can do just ask. Some did but many did not was the word along the line yesterday when I walked up and back from Quorn-Loughborough-Quorn. There was a good idea some years ago that you take one PTS test like the one you mentioned that you have to take at the NYMR and if you pass that covers you for all preserved lines. I remember taking the one at the NYMR when I had a pass the cost I think was £40 for two years. It would be very expensive if you had to pay for each preserved line a PST test on top of the lineside pass and also to become a member of the line like most require to get a lineside pass. Taking one test at your local line should eliminate those that have no idea about track safety who just buy the pass and never read the safety book.

Lovely shot Simon, was the clag luck or a benevolent fireman I wonder(?!)
It was a wonderful event and too popular. I don't have a pass (yet), but pay for a ticket to help future events. It was heaving, more room on Reading to Paddington rush hour trains, platforms crowded, so not suprising there were so many orange vests. Let's hope H&S doesn't become an issue.

Super shot Simon. You chose the best day for the weather. Were you around in the morning? I had gone by 1pm.

Regarding photographers with their backs to the running line, it almost gives the footplate crews a heart attack to see so many orange vests. I have to say most act very responsibly but I hope we don't have the situation where the few idiots ruin it for everyone.

No I did not ask for any arranged smoke but I thank the crew on the M7 that gave this spectacular entrance.Yes I'm sure when the numbers come in the GCR will be very pleased with the figures. The trains were packed full standing room only and as you say the same at all the station platforms. It was a great day plenty of action and my thanks go to the GCR and volunteers like Pete who put on a great three days of non-stop action.
Yes Pete I arrived at 8am, had a quick look down at Loughborough but the light was not good.I parked at Quorn and then stayed in the Quorn-Loughborough area until 4pm.Caught one glimpse of you shouted hello but with so many people about not sure if you knew who it was.Yes we all hope the few do not spoil it for those that abide by the rules I'm sure it must be scary at times on the footplate with so many people about lineside.
Thanks for your comments much appreciated Simon.
