The Goose

I'd had the idea to make a starfighter that "slid" open like this for a while and never liked the mechanisms I'd come up with to accomplish it. Recently I came across a part I thought would help and it was perfect. The only thing is that the ship got a lot bigger than I wanted. So it became more of just getting the opening mechanism housed than making the ship the way it looked in my mind. At first I called it a Corsair, then the "Brick"... for obvious reasons, and finally, after I added the cockpit, the Goose. It also has crazy tiny chicken-leg-like
landing gear. It's real solid though, you can grab the thing with one hand and swoosh it all around.

It slides open with friction. I used a 1x1 technic brick with axle cutout, but probably didn't need anything... once it was complete it had twice the friction from the surrounding pieces. The double man cockpit allows for one pilot (rear) and one weapons controller (front).

Originally, I had the area with the hoses all greebed out, but it looked way too busy so I replaced them. The front "beam" where you can see the darkbley technic bricks was greebed too... and it was too much.
It ended up looking like a goose because I built the body first, then the cockpit, then decided how to connect them.
    A few more pics.

Oh man yes. More, please. This looks freakin' sweet! I like the concept behind it, too.

Everything about this is awesome. Seems very practical, wings in for landing (especially in tighter spaces) and casual flying, wings out for combat and quick agile maneuvering.

Well detailed, good colors and color blocking, has a cool action feature and looks good in both modes--this is really nicely done.

I think you're way too concerned with this looking like a 'brick'. It actually turned out really sleek. The wing idea rocks and the fact that it's swooshable is a respectable achievement indeed!

Vader's heavily modified Y-Wing? Awesome anyway.

This would be brilliant even without the sliding mechanism! Really like the look of this ship- the colours make it look suitably metallic and serious-looking, if you know what I mean! Also, always nice to see a bit of assymetry in a ship.
