Warming the Glass Jugs

Warming the Glass Jugs

Glass jugs are hung in the steam above the maple sap boilers to warm them prior to pouring hot maple syrup inside. If the jugs are cold, they'll shatter as soon as the hot syrup is poured in.

Inside the Sugar Shack

Inside the Sugar Shack

A volonteer watches the progress of maple sap boiling inside the Chelsberg farm sugar shack. The gallon jug hangs above the boiler to warm up. If hot syrup is poured into a cold glass jug, the jug will shatter; hanging them in the steam warms them up just enough.

Trail to the Sugar Shack

Trail to the Sugar Shack

The trail through the sugar bush leading up to the Chelberg Farm sugar shack. Early March is the perfect time to collect sap from Maple trees, and the steam from the boiler is very visible in the cold weather.
