Goddess of Victory

This figure is perched at the top of the 30-m (97 ft) tall Dewey (or Victory) Monument at Union Square Plaza in San Francisco, California. Supposed to be the personification of victory, this statue was modeled from the likeness of a young local heiress at the time, Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, who in her later years, built and later donated the Palace of Legion of Honor to the City of San Francisco.

This Monument commemorates the victory of Admiral George Dewey and the American fleet over Spanish forces at Manila Bay, the Philippines, on May 1, 1898, during the Spanish-American War and was dedicated in 1903. It had withstood the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and still stands proud and tall today.

Taken with the Canon 55-250 f/4-5.6 telefoto kit lens.
