2011 was a year of big change for the Fast family: I turned down an offer to move to Tokyo just a couple weeks before the March 11th disaster. Instead, I started a side business and grew a beard after a 7 stitch bike accident that occurred during while riding into a typhoon. Rie went back to work for the first time since the girls were born. The girls continue to excel at everything they try be it sports, arts & crafts, modeling and even performing on stage. Nina even played Moses in her school's Xmas pageant. We have been extremely fortunate this year, while others not far away have suffered greatly. In 2012, we'll try to live as best we can and keep everyone in our thoughts.

Highlights and lowlights of 2011:

I turn down an opportunity to take a new job in Tokyo only weeks before the earthquake. For a moment we even think about escaping Japan for America. The nuclear threat still bothers us and we often think of those less fortunate in the north of the country.

Rie went back to work. and is enjoying the opportunity to build her career. This year I also branched out into consulting and teacher training with the creation of Fast International Education (FIE).

Nina and Rene excel in everything they do from English to sports to arts and crafts, modeling and performances.

I grow a beard to hide the 7 stitches in my chin after crashing my bike in the middle of a typhoon.

In hindsight it was a very good year.
