8/365 -- Prednisone: The Double-Edged Sword

It really is a wonder drug for my Crohn's Disease, however the side effects are truly horrific: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prednisone#Side-effects

Strobist Info: SB-800 fired via Nikon CLS through translucent Umbrellea directly in front of subject.

yeah, i've been on them off and on again, since I was diagnosed back in Feb of 2001. Right now, I'm also taking Asacol, 6-Mercaptopurine, as well as weekly injections of Humira. Needless to say, health care issues are always a big political concern for me (i was forced to drop out of a Ph.D. program when I was still in grad school, b/c the student health insurance wouldn't cover my Crohn's meds)

thanks, it's with my UBER-FANCY home studio back drop that I bought today -- a $1.50 pack of colored paper purchased at Walgreens (while waiting for that script to be filled). I intended on pulling out the black paper, but I liked that the thin plastic wrap gave a nice little reflection :)

saw this image at the Consumerist.com pool. Was on 40mg of Pred for my Crohn's 2 years ago for 8months. I will never ever go on it again. My joints still hurt every day. On Humira right now and it is working well, but not as good as it could be. Hope things get better for you, us Crohnies need to stick together :)

I feel for you, the doc just put me on Prednisone for a multiple sclerosis flair up. The stuff is a miracle drug -- but it makes you gain wait like nobody's business.

Hope you're feeling better, chrone's is rough, how long did they keep you on it for?

Very nice shot!! Composition and lighting are perfect.....

I too have been on Prednisone off and on for many, many years....
It works the best for Crohn's but was not the ideal choice of treatment for me. I started having severe mood swings and was afraid I was going to end up literally hurting someone.
Later in life (after Prednisone), I discovered that it also causes Hip Degeneration which I now also suffer from. The fun never ends....

Prednisone weakens the bones with long term use (osteoporosis). It can cause wild mood swings (have seen it literally cause hallucinations and psychosis) and insomnia. A lot of people have severe stomach upset with it. It definitely causes some water retention (weight gain). It can cause glaucoma and other eye issues in the long run too. Diabetes is another long term consequence. However, for all of its negatives, prednisone is a great drug at knocking down inflammation and allergic reactions.

(I am a pharmacist, so everyone can feel free to email me with any questions!)

Also, I would avoid wikipedia or webMD. They tend to be on the scary side. I prefer www.medlineplus.gov for disease and medication info for patients.

      Oh Prednisone ...
I've had Colitis since October of 2005 and have spent about 8 out of 12 months every year since on some dosage of Prednisone. It helped me develop a raging case of insomnia, and the chipmunk cheeks it causes are always fun. I hope you're feeling better and haven't had to mess with this crap recently!
