These tracks used to be underground......

Last Saturday, I spotted this in Heerlen......some very old bikes and trainparts, used in the coalmines in Limburg.......many years ago. The coalmines closed in the early 1970th...... this will be exposed here for some time, more can be seen in the Dutch coalminemuseum in Heerlen!
Some songs. by Carboon, made after the coalmines closed, take a look if you have some time!
Sorry, but they are all sung in Limburg dialect....the language used by coalminers........still used by lots of people here......

Interesting. A way of life from the past. A few years ago when I was visiting my family in France we went to the Musée de la Mine in St. Eitenne.

I think the Musée de la Mine in St. Etienne, is bigger than the ones we have here.....a small one in Heerlen, a part of a museum in Kerkrade has some coalmining parts and in Valkenburg is a cave, with a coalmining museum inside.........I've seen two out of three, in the past, the time of filmshooting ;-) Maybe I should find some old shots to scan... my dad was a coalminer, until the late 1960, they started to close the mines.....my dad ended up in a glass curtain factory.......a big chance for him, he was 43 than......had to learn another profession......from coal to small and tiny threads/wires......crazy, but he managed ;-) thanks Andrew, for the link to France!!

How very interesting - and a wonderful way to keep the history of that era alive. I don't know why - but I wouldn't have thought of there ever being mining operations going on in Holland. Were the mines depleted ?
A beautiful look of fall on the street ! ♥♥♥

You posted your comment while I was writing, Irene - and I see that the mines were a part of your family history, too. There must have been many changes in your country when the mining ceased.

  6. irvo. (31 months ago | reply)

Madgne, not depleted........lots of mines were state property....cheaper coal from America, cheap oil from the Middle East and the find of gas under the Dutch surface, made the government decide to close the coalmines in the South of Limburg......it was the biggest industry in those times in this part of our country....you can imagine, that people weren't happy at all, with this decision......the mining would cost to much in the future.......in Germany and Belgium, mines kept open for many more years. My dad was young (43) so he had to switch to another kind of industry...... good thing was, his salery got up........a lot....... for those days, I never heard him complain....coal mining was hard work......with lots of risks!
Maybe I will find time to look for old shots and scan those......maybe this winter ;-) Goodnight and thank you dear Madge!

What a lovely photo. Do I see Martijn in the photo or is it someone else peeking at the tracks as you take the photo? It is good to preserve the history. I'm glad to hear that the coal miners dialect is still being used. It is sad when a language dies out.

Mercedes, I grew up as a coal miners daughter..........so my interest goes out to this industry, that used to be the future of our part of Holland back than......Chemical industry came instead.......I have to admitt, I live from the chemical industry that took over, my husband works there, since 24 years now!

Although I don't understand the words at the video's songs, I loved to watch them and absolutely get in the feeling!
I also could never imagine mining work in Holland! So nice to get to know this part of your history and your family.
    Love the picture too!

Eveli, the whole point of the little video's was to give my contacts and friends an idea how it was here in the past.........Mining was only in the Southern part of Holland, so glad you liked this!! My granddads both worked in the coalmines, so did my dad........
    Enjoy the evening!! xoxoIrene
