2a223 - Burning Man, 1990
The first Man stood on the ground. We raised him by pulling on a rope
attached to his navel. Everyone participated:

.
A video of the first year on the Black Rock desert can be found here:

.
The last umbilical cord was 2000 when the Man stood on a platform of
hay bales:

As the platform got higher and higher, it required a crane to erect
the Man.

I agree. All the fireworks while burning the Man, and especially Crude Awakening, really made me feel that I could hear the sound of the whole event "jumping the shark" last year.
I guess it's up to the regionals to pick up the torch.

yeah i agree, shar. i'm sure it's not a popular thing to say, but i thought rebuilding the man after the early burn was a bad idea, especially given that it was supposed to be a green year. Although, I know alot of people that agree with me. I guess the fireworks and the giant platforms make people feel that the actual burn is "the money shot" so to speak, and more about spectacle than community or participation.

that part (money shot) i completely agree with. the firework display is OTT. seeing these photos make me long for a simpler time and i wasn't even a part of that. I can't imagine how people with 10+ yrs on their belt must feel. and even from 06 to 07 it felt different to me (or maybe i was different, jury is still out). i thought they shouldn't have rebuilt him because it wasn't fair to those who had to do it, but your point is a good one. i'm trying to envision what it will become next...

I had a hand in rebuilding the Man last year. It was upsetting to see it fundamentally vandalized, but as my partner pointed out, the Man is merely the hood ornament for the event, the event itself still went on. The thing of it was, I was feeling more about how disappointed some of my friends would be, when they arrived that Friday for their first Burning Man experience, only to find the thing wrecked. This is why I helped to rebuild it. The BORG and the Man Krew may have their own opinions, but I rebuilt for my friends.

i wish they had rebuilt the man using the bamboo from Opulent Temple's giant bamboo dome that collapsed ... except it would have exploded and sent thousands of red-hot metal straps into the crowd. Oops!
