That's really sweet. Talk about charging your ship, being right next to a sun.

That or there is a giant explosion and the guy is, well, doomed.

I prefer my first guess :D

Thats a pretty neat ship and it is solar powered right?

It's powered by the pressure of the sun and particles ejected from the sun ("solar winds"). There's a great write up on the science here...

...but concept has been tested only to a limited degree. For example Mariner 10 (sent to Mercury and Venus) used the concept for attitude control to reduce fuel usage.

But as ImperialScouts says, it's a pretty dangerous idea! To get maximum speed you need to go as close to the sun as possible as the density of the particles increase, as does the solar winds.

That looks cool as hell, i'd like to try it on a surfboard. :-D
Are the transparent wings a PS effect, or is it some part i don't know about?

Thanks CGH! While I do think (in the distant future) this is possible, I can't see anyone doing it on a surfboard unless they had 10 Trillion+ sunblock...

The sails are an effect, not a piece. I did consider several options when making this; lunch wrap, old LEGO packets, loads and loads of transparent parts... but ultimately since I was making this for a comic doing it as an effect made more sense. Also, if I brick built it there would have been too much weight, forcing me to strengthen up the struts. That would have ruined the look I was going for and/or made the photo taking much harder.

I'll post some raw photos on EB in the next few days.
