Ben Venue Reflection
Looking across Loch Achray, Scotland.
I took a whole bunch of shots from this spot. This is the only one in which the reflection was so clear.

Thanks for the comments everyone!
@stevencunniffe: I suppose if you're wanting snow, then mid October to April would be best. The other thing is the clarity of the air in winter is much better than in summer.
Then hope/wait for day when the wind speed is < 5mph :-)

Hey vorlich, this is awesome quality you're wrenching out of your 350D. I certainly haven't figured out the secret with my own 350D yet. I find my captures to be very soft and requiring a lot of sharpening to be at all passable. Also I have a lot of trouble containing things within the dynamic range. (I suspect I might soon be looking to upgrade.) Any words of advice?
I notice on your profile that you welcome constructive criticism. I'll be more than happy to help out if I ever see an occasion. Heck, let's get a real conversation going. In the meantime, it seems to me like you're doing just fine. Time for you to get another camera to boost your pixel count and go off in search of a gallery, I figure.

Thanks iImagineSo.
Words of advice:
1. Use a tripod,mirror lock-up and cable release - I see a noticable jump in sharpness when I do.
2. Learn about hyperfocal distance.
3. Take your time setting up the shot and camera, ISO aperture, etc - I struggle with this - I'm impatient.
4. Shoot RAW, use graduated filters to balance the exposure and check your histogram on the camera to ensure you don't have any clipping in the shadows or highlights. If in doubt bracket your exposures.
5. Get a good digital darkroom book. I boughtThe Creative Digital Darkroom a few months back and have learned loads from it. I can't recommend it enough, it really helps wring the most out of your RAW files.
6. Take a ton of shots and hope for the best! :)
That seems like a pretty good starting point, I should really keep a note in my camera bag to remind me to follow all the steps. :)

such an outstanding shot, it really looks like a painting, the atmosphere of the whole picture is stunning

Thanks, Vorlich! Your extended comment was really good of you! One last question (for now): What's your lens?
vorlich (43 months ago | reply)
Hi, it's the original, non-IS 18-55mm kit lens. I hope to replace it next year...
Brad Reid™ (43 months ago | reply)
Okay, I'm still not convinced that you're not a miracle worker, but thanks again for your answer.
Brad Reid™ (43 months ago | reply)
But it makes sense now that I think of it, because I do get really sharp results when I use the strobes. The 350D is better than I appreciated.

The colour treatment is exceptional here. The gentle greens are an all important inclusion to break the almost dominant tones of yellows. Very balanced colour-wise and of course compositionally.

Marvelous how this hovers between literal and figurative realms. In one breath it's a landscape, in the next it's an art piece ~~ probably due to the allegorical hues as much as the misted mirror and low-lying clouds. Even the lone stone mimics those evergreens on the shore with its rumpled hat while it anchors the scene like a thumbtack.

Very beautiful. But so beautiful that I wish it was toned down to look like something actually found on the planet Earth. I don't mean this as a criticism because everyone is doing such photos these days. But I wonder if we ought to make our photos look more like the world?
