Old Allegheny County Jail |
The old Jail closed around January
1995.
I photographed the Jail on two different occasions:
First, I called the warden and explained that I was a photographer and wanted to photograph the old jail. He gave me permission and I had free access to the whole place. This was on September 26,1995.
There was also another day that was open to all photographers who registered. I was one of about 20 who come to photograph the Jail on that day.
Designed by Henry Hobson Richardson. Built 1884-86 using 5 ton blocks of Worcester gray granite. The Jail opened in Sept. 1886 and closed in 1995. Remolded in 1996 as Juvenal court for Allegheny County by PERI construction.
