This is great - I love the comic books. Now I'm going to have to look through my Ansel Adams books again :)

If anyone could tell me what issue of The Lone Eagle the one shown is, I could date the photograph and the whole series itself.

I did some looking up on google about Lone Eagle and Exciting Love, and the only site I could find that talked about the dates of Exciting Love had a picture of the cover of the first issue (not the one in the photo) and a claim that it was published from Winter 1941 quarterly. As the same site claims that Lone Eagle changed its name to American Eagle in August 1941 it looks doubtful.
It might be worth dropping the maintainers of that site a line and see if they can help.
So, no clue from me, but that gave me a nice break from work for a bit :)

This is a fascinating insight ona side of Ansel Adams I'd never seen. And I can help with the dating.
On e-bay I found this little gem (now sold) that shows that the edition of "Exciting Love" is from Spring 1941. This ties in perfectly with your other information, including the publication data in Fortune, and cowfish's data about the name change for Lone Eagle.

Bah - I saw that auction and got confused as the picture wasn't in black and white :)

You might have better luck dating these with the Detective Comics in this image. The covers are less clear, but the comics are much better known.

Hmm. The "Detective Comics" in the other pic look like pulp magazines. And I've had no luck in the usual places (comics.org, comicspriceguide.com, comics-db.com, cbdb.com) looking for "Exciting Love" and "Lone Eagle the Fighting Ace" ... very obscure.
I don't have my Overstreet Guides in front of me (or my Gerber books), or I'd have some kind of answer.
Anyone?
