Arthur's House

    North Central, Arkansas.. Best Viewed Large on Black
    I had just driven out of a Downpour in Cotton Plant.. heavy rain. This is about 15 miles North and had not had rain but had this dark, ominous sky.

      a man sitting on his porch, perhaps taking a break between chores...enjoying a moment...simple, effective and definitely a little bit of americana...also a wonderfully seen composition...dramatic sky, pathway of wooden slates...elements that lead us to that house...and the man on the porch...

      Arthur lives on a rural road in central Arkansas.. He thinks he is 95 but no one knows his birthday.. I did not delve. He has no wife or living children.. He has a nephew down the road that gets his mail and takes care of him. He built this house when they "moved him off the farm."

      He has a water hydrant on the front porch, a gas tank on the back porch perhaps for a cook stove.. He has no outside toilet so probably inside. Probably has inside water too.

      He was quite pleasant and had a nice "knee slapping" laugh. I visited over an hour and took about 50 shots.. He is tall and thin and did not move from his chair but the porch was loaded with fire wood, I assume he is well enough to carry a load..

      Please notice there is no junk, out buildings or parking area here... He lives here with nothing but mowed lawn. No clothesline even...

      It's nice to see so many black and white photos in your stream. I like this one in particular because you got a portrait, plus the person's surroundings, plus a sense of the big sky and open space in the landscape -- all in one photo.

      The story made the photo even better!! I love the angle that you took it at! This is terrific! If you know of the song "Curtis Lowe" by Lynard Skynard...I almost imagine that is what he would look like. Just give this guy a dobro, but keep the wine away! (I have no use for the stuff!) You did great!
