Considering how sacred the Ganga (Ganges) is held to be, it's remarkable how much crap people dump in it.
Way better on black. Might be worth viewing large as well, I'm not really sure.

It's a shame and I hate commenting right after reading that, but you've taken an incredible photo. The perspective is interesting too considering the viewer sees it vertical but you shot it looking down. It reminds me of an Anselm Kiefer painting too. Top marks!

Thanks Derek! I was struck the beauty of it even as was dismayed by the trashing.
There was a big piece in one of the Kolkata newspapers while I was there about the trouble caused by the immersing of idols after Durga Puja - traditionally after the ceremonies are all over, the deities are taken down from the pandals and placed into the water of the Ganga. It's not strictly necessary to leave them there as I understand it, but usually that's what happens - and nowadays many of them are coated with toxic paints! People are very worried about wildlife like the Gangetic river dolphin which has somehow managed to hold on this long...
