To achieve the effects above, I "cheated" and did a faux HDR treatment on a single photograph using a combination of CS3 and Photomatix. Real HDR photos are comprised of a series of photos captured at various exposures [then combined]. I only had one photo to play with so I passed it through CS3 and created different photos tweaking the exposure between each save. Dropped the series into Photomatix and used the built in tone mapping to tweak the details and colors.
