Hibox Mountain 15 JUL 11 - 6547 Feet
|
Washington Alpine Club members Larry, Mike, and Bob scramble Hibox Mountain.
This was a Type II fun scramble up Hibox near Snoqualmie Pass. It was a total schwack; not really but there was alot of it though. As you can see it was crazy people going up and down and doing loops trying to stay on the climbers path. Down trees were everywhere and we ended up getting pushed too far left. Not to worry, we battled through and regained the path coming out of the trees nearing the rocky prominence around 5k. We had a nice 600 foot ,or so, snow climb and the SE ridge scramble was very nice. The snow was just soft enough to ascend. We used ice axes. Another party we saw used a combination of poles and ice axes. The second gully may still be in for a few days as a snow climb, but caution getting back onto the rock.
There are many trees down along the Rachel Lake Trail #1313. And even more trees down in the forest going up the climbers path. Following the trail was OK, but after reaching the climbers path we did have quite a bit of trouble staying on the path. I'd say venture closer to the right.
Ragman's TR from 06 is likely the best track up. rogergervin.com/Gallery/Hibox_ Mtn_20060922
I am putting up our Google track and GPS track to be a good sport more than anything. The scramble was the high point of the day. Overall good temps and just enough sun to soften the snow for the up and down.
Almost 9 miles and 3882 feet in gain. If you stay on the path the gain should be 3700'. But, you gain 3250' of it from the Rachel Lake Trail.
