Great use of filters to slow the exposure and balance the sky. Could maybe do with a little tweak to the right.

Lovely mystical image. The 20 second exposure has produced a lovely silky sea.

thank you - slowly getting there with the 60D!

Near enough!! :D Add it to the 'lines and angles' theme perhaps?

Well composed picture with great symmetry and color. Nice silky sea. Were you standing in the water? :)

    13. OOMUMSIE (3 months ago | reply)

thank you for the lovely comments and fave. Thank you, no, not in the sea but close enough to get spray on the filters which I then forgot to wipe off and it shows on every subsequent shot :(

Very good long exposure shot. Simple, with good symmetry and nicely smoothed water. An attractive filter, too.

Lovely symmetry! I hate that color casting!! Mines does that too and it's quite difficult to redo! :(

thanks everyone, I'm glad you like it and am still not impressed by the level of magenta the filters introduced which I have desaturated quite substantially from the original.....
Don't know if anyone else has this issue but here is some info
I found a discussion on Flickr regarding the issue and it seems to be something common to the Cokin and other filters. One commentator on the discussion stated that these filters worked fine with film and that it's a problem with Infra Red as the digital sensor is not filtered for IR whereas film is.... therefore an IR filter sorts the problem.

Also I did a bit of experimenting myself and adjusting the white balance can remove it completely. I found R4000 removes it even when all three are mounted together which equates to the White fluorescent preset on my Canon 60D - it's worth experimenting.....

Don't believe everything you read on the internet! Nearly all digital cameras have IR filters, the only one I can think of that doesn't is a very expensive Sigma. In fact, people pay quite a bit of money to have the IR filter removed in order to do proper IR photography - usually on an old camera body after upgrading to a new one. Saying that though, an additional IR filter may help but personally I wouldn't bother unless venturing into that area of photography.

You've answered your own question too - white balance adjustment takes care of any added colour cast. How about shooting a grey card next time you try this then using that for a custom WB.. any strong colour tones remaining will then be true.

What happens to this image if you take a WB reading from one of the clouds?

      Mike.

seems it's a common problem - lots via google on it and it's not just the cokin - seems to be a common issue - try the white balance - I'm going to invest in a grey card for white balance selection so I'm not cross when I get home!!

thanks Mike - you were writing your comment as I was writing the above!

Lovely colours and beautiful symmetry, like it! Deal is a great place - I am wondering if you took any shots of the fishing boats on the beach?

    31. OOMUMSIE (3 months ago | reply)

thank you all so much for your thoughts and comments

    32. OOMUMSIE (3 months ago | reply)

No shots of fishing boats this time - it was fully dark by the time I'd finished around the pier and freezing - the tips of my fingers had had enough! It was time to head home.... Thanks for the kind comments.

Not a great fan of colour filters, but this works well. Very good.

    34. RicHampton (3 months ago | reply)

Beautifully composed, and love the colour on this, smashing shot

    35. RicHampton (3 months ago | reply)

The colour cast could also be due to stacking three filters? If it was the long exposure you wanted could you have used the ND8 and used a small aperture such as F11, F16?

    36. OOMUMSIE (3 months ago | reply)

thanks Ric for comments and fave..... Why didn't i think of that at the time? doh!

    37. OOMUMSIE (3 months ago | reply)

thanks Graham, not a colour filter though which is why we've entered so much discussion - it is a Graduated grey but because I used three together it's created this effect - I now know what to do for next time.....
