That is SO cute!! I've never seen a squirrel look so relaxed! :)

Whats the story behind this? Why does he have to return to the wild? Why did he leave the wild? Did you raise him? I'm nosy.. :)

He'd fallen from the drey when he was about 5-6 weeks old (eyes still closed). It was pouring with rain and he'd been left lying on the pavement for at least 2 hours, most passersby had assumed he was dead, before I passed by and realised he was alive. I took him home and fed him a weak warm saline solution with a little sugar to revive him. Since then we reared him but we got in touch with a group who arrange for the proper return of abandoned squirrels to the wild. Ultimately he's a wild creature who loves to climb and jump around and it would be wrong and cruel to deprive him of a life in the trees with other squirrels so, as soon as he is weaned from milk and able to get into acorns and chestnuts (the later is pretty much there and he is down to one feed of milk a day) he'll join the program for returning to the wild. We'll miss him loads.

I rescued this little guy as he'd fallen from the dray when he was about 5-6 weeks old (his eyes hadn't opened at that point) and it was clear the parents were not going to find and retrieve him as he'd been lying on the pavement for almost 2 hours in the rain (other people had seen him and told me this). As with so many very young animals he required a lot of feeding and care initially, largely because he had not been weaned. We found out early on that there are some folks who release squirrels back into the wild which we thought would be the best plan. Adorable as he was he needs lots of space to run, climb and jump (you'd be suprised how quickly they become adept at these things and how completely fearless they are) and our small house and tiny garden can't provide him with the space he needed. Ultimately he is a wild animal and, as with all wild animals, whenever possible the best place for them is in the wild.
This guy was very sociable and showed a great desire to follow us and see what we were doing. He is with the release program now and as we understand it is getting along fine with a couple of other rescued squirrels.

What a great story. I can imagine it would be hard to let go but it has to be an interesting experience to see how these guys behave up close.

It is amazing to see how quickly he developed his sense of balance and his jumping and climbing skills. He would try jump progressively longer and longer distances, initially he'd not always make it and wind up on the floor looking indignant. We heard from the folks who run the release program that, after being moved into the large outdoor aviary (one of the later stages of the program) that he staged an escape with two other squirrels. The other two came back but he was more than happy in the wild and couldn't be enticed back. He seems to have taken to life in the wild and hopefully is now thriving.

How could you rescue a grey squirrel? Don't you know that they're destroying the native red squirrel population?
