Tractatus de legibus et consuetudinibus Angliae: Detail
These pages are from Henry de Bractons "Tractatus de legibus et consuetudinibus Angliae" (On the laws and customs of England). The volume was written during the middle of the 13th century and is one of the earliest works on English common law. This copy on vellum is part of the Middle Temple Library's manuscript collection. The volume is undated, although its' last owner was Elias Ashmole who died in 1692, it is almost certainly far older. Vellum was primarily used in the middle ages and, although it continued to be used for some documents and diplomas, it had been largely replaced by paper by the 15th century .
