    Thanks for the kind comments everyone.

    I've been trying to find out what this mushroom is: it seems it's some kind of Amanita mushroom. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita

    As well as being common in cartoons, fairy stories etc, they've particular spiritual significance to some people: www.somashamans.com/

    From what I've read, I'm glad I didn't eat it!

    Yes, some variety of amanita, there are some that kill and some that just make you see things.
