Actually, Melbourne is meant to be even worse - well in the main city train stations anyway.

I had a 'run in' with Queensland rail too Sam.

I wanted to get some photos of Sunnybank Station before they renovated it but the railway dude told me it was 'illegal'. I hope someone captured some photos of the old stations before they McDonaldised them all.

Louise, take photos from the footpath, there is nothing they can do about it then and if they do, then they are breaking the law. You are allowed to take photos of any private property from public property (footpath).

Or you could go along with the kids and make it look like you are taking tourist photos, they said in their press release that they would not mind people taking those sort of photos...

Really ? I missed getting shots of the Grovely station before it was redone - but then the old station building is now at the Samford Museum, so I can go there and shoot it :)

So, if I get this right, all a terrorist has to do is take his wife and kids with him when doing recon! that doesn't sound too hard :)

Bingo. Or just walk around with a camera phone and pretend to be making phone calls on it.

Its only those being really obvious about what they are doing that are terrorists...

If you were taking photo's of QR property from a publicly accessable area they cannot prevent you from doing so. Knowing how paranoid they were about it I printed a copy of the "Rail Enthusiast and Amateur Photography Guidelines for Accessing QR Citytrain Property". I took this with me and spoke first to someone in the ticket booth who tried to tell me I couldnt photograph anything until I showed them the printed guidelines and requested to speak with the station master. I was then asked a couple of basic questions and was allowed to photograph up and down the platforms and anywhere within the station which was open to the public. This was November last year but the current guidelines still appear to be unchanged.
