what was the purpose of using the nd filter ?

Oh. My. God.
Pham, this is some incredible work. Seriously breathtaking!

I'm sure the ND filter was to knock down the ambient so he get away with using such a large aperture to get that sweet bokeh from f/1.8 without completely overexposing everything else...
strobist.blogspot.com/2010/06/using-nd-filter s-to-kill-de... <-- Check this out for info on this...
I like what everyone else has touched on, but I also think that the rim light is killer, especially if you're only using one flash and you were able to seemingly harness the sun and put it's rays right where you wanted them!
AWESOME!!!!

I really like your command of the light in this photo. However, I think your subject is drowning in the background. This is a wonderful shot, but it is begging to be cropped.

IMHO this is one of your best in recent memory - really well done: perfectly composed and lit. You've put the 85mm and your surroundings to great use.

Thanks guys.. it was well received by both parents.. they and the student reallly liked the location and out put..
alot have talked about the crop..
here is my take..
i work for clients and have learned this:
for senior work.. you always want to take a wide out shot like this one.. because
1. you can make a home run image print it huge and sell it no problem.
2. for better croppablity - leave yourself lots of room each way.. for 11x14 , 8x10, 4x3 aspect ration... it is better to have options than not to have it..
3. during golden hours you have basically mins... so what i did was shoot 4 shots of each pose, and for this quick 8 mins.. we did 3 poses.. land scape, vertical, close up, and the wide of the land scape.. the light dropped behind the trees very fast and i really didn't have time to think about 1/3 - 2/3 compositions at that time.. just get the data with 21Mega pixels and worry about it later..
when the winter hits... i will be on each an everyone of your streams and commenting .. just i have a ridiculous schedule in my calendar right now with full time Subaru Eng... and Full time shooting right after work... but soon it will slow down and i will enjoy flickr again.
thanks for your continual support

I would not change the crop. In fact I can not think of thing that I would change. I think the shot is great as it is. I know everyone has different tastes, but I don't believe that all portraits have to have "as little background" as possible. I tend to enjoy 'environmental' portraits and this is a perfect example.
