China - Beijing - Peking - 北京 - Metropolis & Capital of the People's Republic of China - The Seventeen-Arch Bridge (Shiqikong Qiao) in the Summer Palace

Connecting the eastern shore of Kunming Lake in the east and Nanhu Island in the west, the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, the biggest bridge in the Summer Palace, is 150 metres long, 8 metres wide, connecting the Octagonal Tower in the East and the South Lake Isle in the south. It was built after the design of Marco Polo Bridge, which is 15 km to the southwest of Beijing. With white marble balustrades carved with 544 lions in different postures, this bridge looks like a rainbow linking the human world with the Penglai Fairyland. The 17-Arch Bridge was built during the Qianlong Reign (1736-1795) of the Qing Dynasty. From either side to the central arch, you get nine arches, and nine is the supreme number for the emperor.

My photos are mainly about rich color captured at dusk or dawn, sunset or sunrise, but sometimes it is simply impossible to do that. Beijing is really difficult city for photography due to the ever present pollution and smog. The day I got to the Summer palace was so gray and polluted that I could hardly see 100m ahead of me. I decided for slightly higher key technique to give the place dreamy look... so nearly no color at all. Sometimes even the worse weather conditions can be used in our advantage.

I agree. Its difficult to get the colors out of Beijing with the smog. You created a heavenly atmosphere in this case! Nice as always Lucie.

Very cool bridge ... and always enjoy the backstory/context you provide. Nice job working with what you had. I think this would make a great candidate for a texture overlay, transforming into something more "painterly".
