Mongolia - Sunset over Temporary Home - Overnight stay in Mongolian Ger

Nearly all herders live in white gers (felt-lined tents, yurt in Russian), a characteristic sight throughout Mongolia. Each family has their own ger. A ger is a herder's most important possession. When a couple gets married the family builds or buys them a new ger. Even in towns and cities many people still live in gers. In many cases they live in a regular house in summer, but move to a ger in winter, as they are easier to heat. Usually they build a fence around the yard, in which people may have some livestock or even a garden.

Staying in a ger might seem as a very romantic way to spend a night and it might be true, especially when the setting around is stunning (which often is), however you have to keep in mind, there is generally no electricity (if there is, it is only enought to light a bulb), there is no running water and in particular there is no central/electric heating, which is something really handy if you are there after the summer season. There is a stove with fire inside (if you are lucky, this particular Ger on this shot has no stove as there is no chimney) which is being fed in the early part of the night, but it slowly and surely dies throught the night... and you wake up because of the cold :-) Other than that, it is a great experience !

We stayed in a Yurt on the Isle of Eigg, which was ok while it was dry, but now we have exceptionally wet and windy weather, I imagine it would be less comfortable, even with a stove inside, such is the West Coast of Scotland...as you already know !
A fine image with great information, Thank You !
