Turkey - Moon Rise over Kurtuluş Cami (Mosque) in Gaziantep
Gaziantep (Ottoman Turkish: Ayintap; previously and still informally called Antep, is the capital city of the Gaziantep Province in Turkey. It is amongst the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Gaziantep is one of the first human settlements in Anatolia and lies where Mesopotamia, considered the cradle of civilizations, and the Mediterranean region meet. In Turkey, Gaziantep is famous for its baklava and regarded there as its native city, though it only appears to have been introduced to Gaziantep from Damascus in 1871. In 2008, the Turkish patent office registered a geographical indication certificate for Antep Baklava.
Kurtuluş Cami (mosque) was originally built as a church in 1892 and was later converted into a mosque after serving as a church and then as a prison for some time. The church’s bell tower was converted into a minaret and a second minaret was built in the opposite corner. Maintaining its original architectural characteristics, the mosque is one of the largest in Gaziantep.
