Iran - Palace of Darius and part of columns of The Great Palace of Xerxes in Persepolis Reflected

Persepolis - its ancient name was Parsa to ancient Persians, its modern name is Takht-e Jamshid, (Persian: Throne of Jamshid), to Iranians it was the capital of the Achaemenid kings of Iran (Persia). Persepolis is located about 50 km northeast of Shiraz in the province of Fars in southwestern Iran. It was set on fire by Alexander upon his defeat of Darius III. The Achaeminid Empire was large and important : it covered Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Macedonia (FYROM), a part of Syria, Israel and Egypt. In the North : Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan... 24 different nationalities.

Of all the preconceptions, of all the regions, of all the continents in the world, the hardest to shake is that of the Middle East. The mere mention of Iran nowadays is likely to conjure images of a war-torn desert, where women resemble black tents and bearded men burn pictures of Uncle Sam. Upon relating my Iranian adventures in a conversation, silence inevitably falls, followed by a sequence of furrowed brows, maternal concern and the unavoidable question: "Isn't it really dangerous to travel there?" On the contrary, my journey through Iran was among the safest in my travels. Reliable transport, good roads, beautiful landscapes, zero criminal incidents, stylish women in light hijabs, and an overwhelming friendliness of a people that gently transformed my journey into a string of leisurely afternoon teas and spontaneous dinners.

Persepolis itself is a fascinating place, especially for photographers, however don’t search for lake or pond anywhere near Persepolis. The day before I visited Persepolis, there was heavy rain across bigger part of Middle East, including majority of Iran and even in Kuwait where heavy rain caused power failure for few days. As a result of heavy rain, there were still water puddles around Persepolis when I got there the next day late afternoon. As it was my 4th visit to this place I wanted to capture it in new different way and the possibility of reflection was a perfect way to allow me to do that. I got some curious looks from people around as I was nearly laying on the ground trying to get the best angle however when people realized that you can get great reflections, there were more photographers trying to do the same very soon afterwards. This shot captures reflection of Palace of Darius and part of columns of The Great Palace of Xerxes.
