This photo captures ruins of Cill Chriosd (Church of Christ) on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The ruins of this church are frequented by the odd tourist and sheep, with a stunning backdrop of the red Cuillin hills. Cill Chriosd (Church of Christ) lies atop a small rise near Swardale in Strath Suardal valley, east of Broadford on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The valley has seen Christian activity since the 7th Century, when St Maelrubha preached from a nearby rocky knoll called Cnoc na-Aifhreann, (Hill of the Mass). Just south of the church is Loch Cill Chriosd, a shallow, reed filled loch. The first stone church to be built here dates form medieval times. The ruins of the current church date from around 1500. Services at Cill Chriosd continued into the 19th Century when the parish church moved to Broadford. Within the graveyard are a number of graves relating to members of the MacKinnon Clan. Just to the left of the entrance gate is a medieval grave slab with a beautifully carved foliate cross. In the 18th Century the valley was busy with marble quarrying and at one between 1907 and the outbreak of WWI a short railway ran from the quarry to Broadford Old Pier.
Travel Directions and Getting There - The church ruins are 2.5 miles south from Braodford on the B8083 road to Torrin and Elgol. This is about 11 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh and 27 miles from Portree.
