Wattled Crane (shot w/ Snooted Flash) @ US National Zoo (+baby pix)
Another from my first day experimenting with a snoot for my (sb-800 on camera) flash. I really like the effect, because of how it doesn't light the background much and isolates the subject.
Settings: Manual - f/13, 1/250th, ISO 250, 400mm. I forget the flash settings, probably 1/8 power, but not sure. I was trying all kinds of settings, and using the f/stop (and flash power) to adjust exposure.

That new equipment does a great job isolating light on the subject! The crane shot is really superb!

Jon, thank you SO much for taking the time to detail exactly how you take your photographs. I'm new to all this and am loving the tidbits you put up. The tidbits combined with the photo make a great learning tool. I'm going online to buy a snoot asap. Cheers, Steve

p.s. this is the best closeup of the crane i've seen!

You don't need to buy a snoot!
Just get a cereal box, or a box from granola bars like I used, and unfold the packaging until you've got a nice big flat piece. Then use duct tape and the flash unit to measure and create the cardboard "tube". Once you've made it, you can fold it, and keep it in your camera or flash bag... Look at the link I provided above for more details:

Really nice closeup capture. Clearly shows the wattle that gives this crane its name.
