NYC Twin Towers - During Construction

This is another one from my Grandpa's or Dad's Slide collection (not sure which)... I think this was taken roughly in 1970 since you can still see the cranes on top of the towers.

These slides are all about 35 years old and very deteriorated.

I remember when they were under construction. I lived in Connecticut at the time, but my Dad lived in Greenwich Village, and I'd visit him there every other weekend or so, and I remember how they grew, becoming the tallest thing we could see.

Yeah... I grew up in Long Beach LI, and I remember you could see them from the island, they were that tall. I also recall that when I was a kid I had a neighbor that worked in one of the towers, and I thought it was cool...

They just make me sad now.

Oh, how sad. I never saw the Twin Towers before. I was just in NYC for vaca and went to the sight. Putting some memorabilia up on my sight. Not much.

Hey - I was just looking at this again and I think, almost positive, that black building to the right is the one they are going to have to tear down. I have more of a close up of that building. Too much damage from 911. How odd, it happened on September 11th - we call it 911 - which is our police emergency number. Strange huh?

    6. Nikographer [Jon] (80 months ago | reply)

yeah scooby, a lot of strange things... I didn't know any more buildings were in jeopardy as a result, I thought all the damaged ones were down/demo'd that couldn't survive.

Well, you might want to double check that but I heard that while I was there. If you hear diff. let me know so I can update pics. Here's the best close up I have. It's looking from the PATH. So, in my pic, if I am correct, it's on the left v. the right in your pic. Let me know if this "is" the correct bldg.

      911

Another nice one. It's really neat as the towers are still on the water front!

It be really cool if the twin towers are like that today. Almost finished and standing taller and stronger

I agree with others, and thank you for posting your family’s slides here for others to appreciate. It was always one of my goals - I suppose a dream - to visit NYC and the WTC towers. I'm from Australia and had only seen the Twin Towers in movies proudly featuring the NYC skyline. I reckon NYC must be still a pretty great place. But, there is sadness for those of us who witnessed the Twin Towers collapse and the loss of so many innocent lives. We sure do and will remember those people who got caught up in this mess, and photos posted on Flickr and elsewhere will help to explain to future generations or even prove what happened on that blue blue day, and what was lost. I suppose we should forgive those who mean harm. But, on this one, forgiveness is difficult.

I'm sure your father could never have imagined, when he pressed the shutter release, the emotional response triggered by his photos of these towers. Thanks again for preserving and posting your photos. They have a warm quality.

I could see them from Jones Beach on a clear day or from my roof in Queens. *sigh*
I wish i was still in NYC

I believe when this photo was taken, it was about 72 or early 73.... I remember going through the city as a kid when we used to go upstate... We always wondered what they were building there in downtown.... I would say more like late 72

    20. R36 Coach (37 months ago | reply)

It's late 1972 or 1973. The South Tower's upper stories are still incompleted.
