Great Falls Blue Heron
I went to Great Falls a lot in 2006 and 2007, and it has been fun to go lots more with regularity again (2010). Some times I question going so often, but then I get days where the light is different or special or an animal is different or special. The best days have that for both.
Above not cropped, shot from the MD side looking down off the main overlook at a steep angle. The heron rookery up river must be quite active because the herons were as active as I've seen them all year. As I left the river/overlook for the night I saw many many herons flying up river, returning to the rookery. It was cool. (BTW, the eagle's nest up that way too has 2 chicks!)

How did you get the water blurred but the bird not??? how did he stand still for that long(1/8) .. Brilliant! how this came out.

Jon, this is wonderful, indeed. Amazing that you could get the slow shutter speed photo with the bird so still.......he was definitely concentrating on his fishing!

Jon I love your descriptions of what you see, what is going on around the photo and how you feel about it. The photo is beautiful but so much richer with your added thoughts and impressions... makes it richer than just a beautiful capture

this is such an amazing shot -- and it captures the element of a feeding heron so well. there's so much chaos rushing around it, but when hunting they seem singularly focused!
