Not too noisy, they make a barking type sound but I don't recall it when they flew, more so when they were all on the beach huddled together. The snow geese are about 10,000x noisier. Check out the sound clip on this page: www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black_Skimmer/id

This is wonderful, Jon. What a catch. I have seen a grand total of one (1) Black Skimmer in my life. This is amazing. I built a boat in a shipyard once that backed onto the Fraser River flats. They were covered with about 20,000 Snow Geese. Every so often, something would spook them, and they'd lift off, fly in a big circle, then land again, muttering among themselves as if saying "What the hell was it about THAT time then?" The muttering wasn't bad, but lift off the noise was pure cacaphony.

Cool shot, love the title and thanks for the link to the sound clip - what a racket that must have been when the flock took to the air!

Sweet, we get large groups of them around here too.. I just posted a few pictures of individuals. I love their sounds, especially when there are many of them mixed with royal terns.
