American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)

    American Kestrel, Falco sparverius.

From the Eagle Festival at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The birds they had on display (ie captive) were just too cool to post one a day... See also: Barn Owl and Eurasian Eagle-Owl.

Nice shots! They are rather hard to get a shot of in the wild.

      Thanks sephia1369 and backroadshutterbug!

Yes they are hard to spot and photograph in the wild... I've spotted them 3 times around Blackwater. Twice I got photos. I've not posted any of them before since they're not so... something. Close probably. Anyway, here's a wild one from Blackwater.

      Here's another wild shot:

For the above wild bird, he put up such a fight! I just wanted to photograph him, and he kept leap-frogging me, staying just out of prime range, like he knew... I consider these guys right up there with Kingfishers for their determination to be bothered by the camera and photographer.

I love these birds. Have not seen one here on the East Coast but know of a couple canyons in SoCal where they always are hunting. Beautiful photo.

These are quickly becoming my favorite birds. Wonderful complementary bokeh colors here, and lovely details. Very nice.

They do not like to be photographed, so I'm so happy you had him nailed down. Has to be the most beautiful American bird of prey. Wonderful, Jon.

Very cool! We have loads of kestrels in our area right now. Every time I go out to visit my horse, I can guarantee I'll see at least 3 or 4 of them. (I drive through a ton of farmland) There are two in particular that I've been "stalking" to try and get a good photo opportunity! They are very skittish and will typically fly off if you come anywhere close! I've found I can get a lot closer to them on horseback -- I just haven't figured out a good way to carry a 400mm telephoto while riding! haha

Oh my. What a wonderful portrait! I just love the colors! Somehow the male Kestrels here in Europe don't seem to be just as nicely colored as yours are. But knowing how happy I was with my one Kestrel shot I managed to take (where it was recognizable at least as a Kestrel, that is) I can fully imagine the thrill... Great job!

I really like your animal photo!
