Red-Shouldered Hawk @ US National Zoo

I'm pretty sure one of the pairs' chicks! They finally had a successful season. I've been watching them for a while and they've failed every year until this one (2006, 2007, 2008). Most of these shots are the wild zoo pair

Very nice shot! It's good to know the Zoo has success in captive breeding.
I have been seeing quite a few shots from local Flicker peeps from around here of chicks in the wild for Redtails, Coopers and White tailed Kites.

      Very nice shot!!

@gotfish_mb Marc Briggs - these hawks are not captive. they come and go from the zoo / area as they please.... so - not captive breeding here.

There's also a breeding colony of hundreds of Black-Crowned Night Herons that are wild too....

Awesome shot! I can't believe I couldn't find their nest. Is it by the Bustards?

    14. Nikographer [Jon] (36 months ago | reply)

The nest is somewhere above the eagle exhibit, but I don't think it is visible anymore with the leaves and all. There's a road behind that area which is currently closed due to the elephant trail construction... The hawks can be regularly seen around 8:30am in the Kori yard when they steal the food from the Kori's...

Oh, okay. We talked to one of the docents and he said they steal the Kori's food too. They're smart little hawks. :)

Great capture and it speaks highly to your commitment to finally get a "baby" hawk photo at the NZP!

If my favorite golden little monkeys were roaming around outside, things would be very "interesting" right now.
