2008 Year In Review

big
2008 was a great year, except for the passing of a good friend (Takuma Akiba)...

I blogged some of what I think were my 2008 highlights. The blog post has a couple images per month... I had 142 images make Explorer, with 31 images still in Explorer. I don't shoot for Explorer, but it's nice to get more exposure. In 2008 I passed 400,000 stream views, and 3 million overall views on flickr. Thanks!

In 2009 I think I might finally get some kind of dedicated external storage array, like a Drobo. I put a lot of time in to my photography (hobby), and I'd hate to lose a drive with tons of images. I do DVD backups (over 130 disks in 2008) but they have a limited life span (supposedly varrying from a few years to 10 years or so.) And if I had to reconstruct a drive from the DVDs it would take a long time - but I could do it.

This past year I also finally took a hard drive and made some backups of key files and folders (~300GBs worth) and brought it to a family member's house for off site backups in case my place burns, floods or gets robbed...

Have a happy new year.

Great work that you do - enjoyed by so many people! Congratulations on your Explore accomplishments!

Have you ever thought of storing your pictures on flash drives rather than on discs? It would save time, and perhaps the longevity is better?

Thanks for sharing all of your pics with the world :)) They are awesome!

Thanks Jeannette. I enjoy photography a lot, and flickr too.

I've got about 1600 GBs of originals in around 3 1/2 years - and that's after I already deleted a bunch of online copies of raw files for sub-par images... Flash drives wouldn't work for that much data. The Drobo takes up to four drives and automatically sets up a RAID config, so any one drive can fail without data being lost. With 4 x 1TB drives you get around 3TB of usable space I think.

    Happy New Year, Jon!

    I always enjoy your photos.

And yes, the data storage is becoming a challenge. Good thing terabyte drives are now ~ $120 cheap.
