Blue Angels @ Joint Service Open House 2006

Blue Angels @ Joint Service Open House 2006 by Nikographer [Jon].

This weekend is the Air Show at Andrews AFB! I'm planning to go both days, and will be gathering all my gear tonight, cleaning it, picking what to bring etc. I think I will mostly use my D300 w/80-400mm D VRand D200 with Tamron 18-200mm....

If you're planning to go to the airshow be sure to check out the JSOH web site and read the restrictions as to what you can and cannot bring:

I should be there on Sunday. Just hoping they let my big telephoto in without any problems! (And hoping it doesn't rain!) Got any tips for getting good shots?

Amazing shot. 100% professional quality.

Thanks for the heads up on prohibited items, which include:

Camera Bags (Larger than 1 cubic foot)

I guess you pick a camera and a lens or two and carry them in bare...my only camera bag is a backpack, which is larger than one cubic foot.

I've been to a few airshows (this one) but I'm no expert... You can bring in just about any camera and lens, but the camera bag has to be 1 cubic foot or smaller. So I bring a small bag, and then carry my camera(s) on my neck when I enter. You can also bring a chair, a monopod, a tripod, etc. I'm going to possibly bring a chair, but probably not a monopod or tripod. I brought a monopod last year and the planes just move too fast to be able to setup and pan....

You can't bring water, food, etc.

Biggest tip would be continuous auto focus, and for the high speed pass action, pick one of the two planes track it with the camera and then peak at the other plane with your other eye. When you can see both planes click like mad!

Thanks for the tips, Jon! :) I've never shot anything remotely like this, so it should be interesting to see what I get.

I'm a bit annoyed. I could only go one day, so based on weather reports from Wed. and Thurs., I chose Sunday. It was supposed to be the nicer of the two days. I rented like $75 in gear and now the weather forecasters are saying Saturday is going to be the better of the two days! Gah!

Both days should good (crosses finger, toes, elbows, knees, ankles, etc). Sunday looks ok for the morning and even if some weather moves in it could make for some more dramatic shots as long as it doesn't just get gray and rain...

Thanks for the info, Jon!! I was on the JSOH site yesterday reading the restrictions, schedules, displays, etc... I'll look for you on Sunday! Stinky weather today isn't making for a good show for the school groups... (:

Not gonna bring the 600mm for these birds....lol

Great shot with lots of action and detail. Great composition and impact. The Blue angels were here last week at Barksdale AFB, LA. I got to go three times, first at night (not to productive) second on Saturday (clouds to the ground) and third Sunday (Hooray - Great weather and lots of good shooting).
Hope you will visit my photostream now and in the short future for more shots.

Have a great time, thee's nothing like working these shows.

Nice shot! I'll be at the show tomorrow, as today was a washout. I would've loved to beat the crowd, but I'm hoping that tomorrow's weather will make me forget about that... :-)

Hope to see you there!
