Red-Tailed Hawk Encounter

Video!

It came to me while driving home from getting a hair cut. Flickr video rocks. I've wanted to post tight crops, but show the entire image. I've wanted to provide commentary. I've wanted to have a way to show more than one image.

For all those "purist photographers on flickr" that hate this video thing, i say: "embrace an extension to the format you already love....."

Rock on Flickr.

    Grrr8 Job, Jon!
You're leaving the starting block in Excellent form, with this flickr video thing... and with
a Really nice subject, too, in this hawk encounter. I love the way it displayed its red tail for you, too!
Any disclosure of how long it took you to put this together?
Mike placement might need some tweaking.. to avoid those percussive pops, try placing the mike so that you're speaking across the front of the mike, instead of directly at it... that way you don't actually breathe directly at it. No Pop Filter needed, this way. Moving the mike off to the side, and maybe slightly above the nostrils also cuts the slightly nasal quality, as well.
Forgive this former radio guy for pushing this advice at ya?

I realize it's production value is not perfect.... I wanted to post something like this yesterday, but only got part way through it.

As for what it took: The photo to edits took about 10 minutes. Then to make the video took another 30 or 40 minutes, changing image times, transitions, adding the text overlays... Then I tried to export a video file and it was fine, but all black, no video. So I made some changes and re-exported the video twice to get it right (took 10 minutes each time to process)...

To write the text took about 10 minutes. To record it took approx. 2 times per speaking segments to get it right. I recorded each individually, hoping to get something done and right, and then move on to the next part.

Then I took my video as previously edited, and dropped in the audio, in Sony Video Vegas. I adjusted the placement of the 4 or 5 clips of audio, and then exported it again. Then I uploaded it. Without counting the time to take the photos, the entire process took about an hour or so. I had to wait maybe 10 minutes for flickr to process the video and have thumbnails and small versions displaying properly before I set it to publicly visible....

Maybe it's just me, but each time I watch this, and hear the "Vote Quimbey" line at the end I laugh out loud....

I hear your enthusiasm and share it. I was fortunate to "meet" a wild red-tailed hawk at eye-level and to take a few photos that started my birding "hobby" (obsession?).

When it took flight, my heart stopped. I felt the "whooosh" of the wings... It was an adrenaline surge that I've not re-captured yet but hope to, someday.

I don't mind videos like yours and birdyboos they are very educational but the ones where you need to take motion sickness pills just to watch them forget it.LOL

A couple of weeks ago, I was driving and out of the corner of my eye I saw a hawk (I'm pretty sure) take off and I could sense it was going to swoop down in front of me so I almost caused an accident slamming on the brakes. People were honking at me and I'm pretty sure I got "the bird", but I saved a bird's life. I saved a bird, but I got the bird. I guess you have to give and take! :)
