Screech Owl, Wild and Just Released (3/24/2008)
This was the "poser" screech owl that I got to witness being released a couple days ago. See the other photos I posted for more details.
This one was (I think) hit by a car, and rehabilitated for some time. My friend did the release(s), and invited me to take some photos. Here the owl was released and took up a perch about 10 or 15 feet from us on a very low spot on the tree.
The light was low, I had my ISO way up (auto, this is 1600 @ 1/100th), and I didn't want to spook him off this great spot. I managed to get lots of photos and he watch us for a number of minutes.
I've only even seen one wild screech owl before, and to get to see this guy and witness his release was a great experience.
A big thank you to the rehab folks and my friend that did these releases!

Oh my, this is one perfect picture. Kudos to the rehab team--here's hoping for longevity for this small and vulnerable wild critter.

Awesome, Jon! It's so good to hear a happy ending to this story. These birds are so cool and this is just an incredible capture. It's stories like this that help me pull myself out of the abyss. Great work!

I am sorry for not responding to my contacts for so long but health issues completely preoccupied my mind. Things look much better now so I will be catching up as fast as I can. This capture of this owl is superb. Beautiful composition. Nice to see one get rehab and make it back to the wild. Nice job of documenting the event.
