Nikographer [Jon] (70 months ago | reply)
Wow, thanks everyone.
This was ISO500, 400mm and 1/60th of a second (with VR). I've been trying to avoid really high ISO, and using a monopod like this at 400mm results in a lot of stinkers, but then there are the shots that aren't blurry and it's worth trying it like this. The blur in his hand was because he was moving it, and maybe that even adds to the shot.
Nick Nichols, a National Geograpic pro I respect a lot, isn't afraid to use a blurred shot, and I think he's top notch... Heck, I think it is a real part of his style.

Really nice shot Jon. Don't know about the Nikon's but on my 20D I can shoot up to ISO 800 without any really noticeable difference. You might want to try it sometime on something that doesn't count for much and see what happens. It can sure help the DoF thing.

You should photoshop a cigarrette into his hand.

Love the contrast, Jon. Focus is a bit soft on the eyes, unfortunately, otherwise this would be a real stunner of a portrait.

I'm glad you said what you did about the blurr even being a plus sometimes, I really agree with that, but thought maybe it was a just me thing.

I'm jealous! I was there too, but only got shots of these guys way up in the trees. These guys are so colorful, but the hands are a bit creepy.
Your shots are always outstanding!

Love these little guys!
When I was there I had a shorter lense and an attendant yelling at me for being too close all of the time I was snapping away.
Use a shot for my icon now...
