- (1) create a source image (with fixes) that is bigger than your final image will be
- (2) From the main image do a layer via CUT to isolate the part that is to be OOB.
Then make a second copy of that layer which you add the drop shadow to. You need to make this a different layer so you can put it behind the frame and not get shadows on top of the main image. - (3) use the select and erase tools to remove the parts of the OOB part that should be removed. A brush tip that doesn't have a sharp edge often works well. Also try the magic-wand tool if you can get good contrasts to make the erasure easy.
- (4) to add the actual frame part, add a layer, then use the select tool to pick the area that will be in-frame. Setting up guide lines makes this easier. Once selected, hit Ctrl-Alt-I to get the inverse. Then hit Shift-F5, while that new layer is selected. Fill it in with a color (black).
- (5) continued:
Once you have the inverse selected and filled black, redo the selection area just a little bigger then the main photo area, try to get the spacing even, and do the inverse thing again and delete most of that black layer. Now you have a border. - (6) to get the drop shadow right, make a 2nd copy of the OOB part, and place it behind the frame layer. Then add the drop shadow. You might need to trim this copy of the layer to avoid extra lines showing up in the final image.... I often have to use the select tool to trim the top edge...
- Note: for this image, and it's underlying moderate quality, I also use the magic wand too and tried to select everything except the tiger, and increased the BLUR to avoid noise and pixelization....

It's an interesting idea that you're using here. Trying to decide whether I like it or not. Great photo of the cub though.

Nice job Jon. I still remember your Nov.2005 tiger was the first out of bounds pic I had seen on flickr.

Very nice " Special Effects " on the picture. Wish I could figure out how to this type of thing. When ever I try to PS it usually turns out to be a lot of BS.

Thanks for the kind feedback. After the first two comments, I wondered if I'd wrecked the photo :p
I don't think I have a full on tutorial in me, but check this guide out, and see the notes I'm about to add. I don't do it the same way as the guide by Serrator, I sort of hack together a frame and parts that are in the frame and parts that are not.
And here are a couple other's I've done:
The one I think crew23 is refering to:

Pretty cool kitty. Nice OOB.

Jon, I think it is cool. What makes it work is the paws hanging over the edge, just the way my cats lay on chairs sometimes.
