Makin' Babies - Red-Shouldered Hawks

    Red-Shouldered Hawks, Buteo lineatus.

From Sunday morning. I've been following this pair of wild birds at the National Zoo for a few winters now. I went looking for them, and within a few minutes found the female. Then the male came around, dropped off a twig to the nest and then joined the female here. They mated twice within about a half hour. I suspect they'll be sitting on eggs within the week.

p.s. This is "pro" golfer Isenhour's arch enemy I hope he gets jail time.

Within a week, they're closing off that trail. I wonder what effect all the construction will have on them and their chick.

Nice shot Jon, SAD that golfer had to do that!! he is should realize that killing another animal should make his life miserable! a pretty heartless act.

Very impressive shot Jon. The fact that they're wild birds makes it all the more outstanding. I only found your photo stream yesterday, but you can be sure I'll be visiting regularly from now on.

great lighting too...and the story which I had read earlier made me sick..........can't imagine how someone could do that, even with his lame excuse about not trying to actually hit the hawk. Who thinks like that?

I read the article you linked here. What I don't understand is where were all the consciences of the entourage you know he had in tow with the camera crew???? Didn't one person say "hey, maybe this isn't a good idea?" They all should pay fines and do time as far as I'm concerned. His comment "I didn't think I would kill it" says it all. He's a moron. A rich moron. The worst kind. Great capture and thanks for the message.
