Catching it is less than half the problem

Bald Eagle catches a fish at Conowingo Dam along the Susquehanna River in Maryland. A second eagle swoops in to try to steal himself a fish instead of catching his own.... Timing wise the left eagle probably caught that fish about 5 seconds ago.

    D300 1/1600, f/8, 400 mm, ISO 800.

It's so interesting, because most people think eagles are so noble (Amercian Symbol) but in reality they are complete scavengers. hmmmm. This is an awesome photo, you really captured some wonderful action here. The wing span is always so impressive.

      Cowabunga, Dude!
Your perspicacity pays off big-time, when it does.
Do you find that the D300 aids you in any way besides image quality?

      Awesome again!

Seen in a darckr view of your photos (mine, ?).

Wayne, with the D200 I'd probably be setup at ISO 400 or 500 and wide open (f/5.6) and still not have a very fast shutter speed.. With the D300 I was at ISO 800 and f/8 and still managed to get 1/1600th So, the D300 let me shoot at a hgher ISO and still stop down a little and STILL get a pretty fast shutter speed.

ISO 800 really isn't that bad. Oh, and the above is from the jpg. For this outing I shot jpgs only.......

Great shot. Beautifully timed. Must have been a thrill. I've still not managed to get away from family activities. We're traveling the outer shore of NC on the way home, though. I'm excited. :)

Wow Jon, that is ONE amazing shot!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like you had great weather too. I went to Brackendale today. Lots of eagles there but far away and it snowed........... last year I was luckier. Might have to go again if the weather smartens up.

Whoa! Timing is everything! Awesome catch, Jon. Appears you had the speed just right. These guys are no better than gulls, are they? Steal whenever they can without doing too much work themselves. (Reminds me a lot of some people).
