Splish-Splash - Eagles take a bath in the Potomac @ Great Falls Maryland - 1 2 3 [4]

I went back again today, 7/8/2006 to check on the eagles. What I learned today is that they have a second nest. (*updated, more likely a favorite tree, not a second nest) It's up river from the main nest. After watching them for about an hour, the female flew down to the water, and started cooling off and taking a bath. A bit later the male joined in and did the same. The female then flew to another rock, shook off a bit, and then flew to a tree and preened herself. The male joined her after about 5 minutes on his own in the water. I heard Jr. but didn't see him today.

WOW! I never new birds would submerge themselves like this.
As always, your timing and shots are incredible!

That would be interesting if they nested twice in one season.

    Thanks everyone!

@Doug, yeah I'm having flashbacks to the special "Caracals and Eagles" where 2 black eagles duel-bruded (unsucessfully btw, in Africa)... I can't say at this point if there is another offspring in that nest, I just couldn't see, but one of the adults was inside the nest for a long time, while the other adult was just on a branch adjacent to the nest...

I started a thread about my eagle adventures in the Wildlife Photography group if you care to read it...
