I totally understand what you mean when you talk about not having words to describe the experience. When I followed the GBHerons this winter/spring, there was something almost mystical about it. They're majestic birds, but to see a Bald Eagle would be just amazing. I so appreciate these images you post -- it's the next best thing to watching it myself. :)

Good day to be an eagle, bad day to be a fish. The head grab can't feel good. It's great to see them when they actually hit. I have watched eagles circle a lake for a half hour and miss every time. It gives new meaning to the phrase, "eagle eye". :-)

Wow, he did get the fish. Really well timed capture

Nice catch (both you and him).

@Geyser Gary that surprises me, that the eagles you've seen aren't more successful hunting. It's been my experience to see eagles at a stocked-man-made lake in MD (Centennial Lake) and here on the Potomac River getting fish very easily, within minutes, often in the single digits. Osprey on the other hand are much slower.

The eagle actually stalked his prey I think from the tree, and flew about 150 yards to get it. Since he had the fish in his grips for a split second on his first pass (when he lost it) I suspect he caught the same fish moments later after a rest in the tree.

He probably killed it on the first pass. I've possibly seen this hunting behaviour twice now where the hunt is a two step process. lol

Although I called this one "The One That Got Away" I think this is the other one where he got it on his second pass. This is from Centennial Lake.

This is excellent. One of the most memorable things I ever saw was an eagle hit the water in front of my boat, then flop down onto his belly. I had all my trolling gear out at the time, but got as close as I could and turned in circles watching him. He swam with his neck arched, doing a breaststroke with his wings. When he got to shore, he got one foot anchored on the rocks, gave a heave, and pulled out about a 5 pound Coho salmon that he had in the other. I was amazed at how well they swim. Would have loved to have today's camera then.

Fantastic shot! I have a similar shot- but my eagle grabbed a duck instead of a fish. Your shot is crisp and clear and full of detail- perfect shot!
