Portland Head Light - Cape Elizabeth, Maine

I was doing some file clean up on my PC tonight. I deleted about 140GBs of Nikon RAW files. I have backups of them, and rarely use the RAW files anyway. I often shoot jpg+RAW but don't bother with the RAW files.

Anyway, I'd shot some different views of the lighthouse in bracket mode while I was up in Maine this summer. I recently got Photomatrix, and turned 3 shots in to the above HDR.

    Nikon D200 w/ Tamron 18-200mm at 18mm, 3 shots bracket HDR..

Fantastic scene and colors, Jon. My only concern is that the level of sharpening is too high, and all the accentuated texture is causing the picture to become flat, even though it has great depth.

Jon, I always enjoy your HDR shots. They never have that overly processed look to them. Just great detail and tonal range

such a classic shot. Nicely done jon

    22. Nikographer [Jon] (56 months ago | reply)

      Thanks everyone.

@Leviathor - I suspect that what you're saying about the sharpening is true at this resolution, due to its smaller size. The larger original (which I didn't post) was less harsh. If I recall correctly I sharpened - smart = 50 and USM = 50 or 60... Also, when I resize for smaller, I use the Bicubic-Sharper setting.

Nice shot! I can't believe that you deleted 140GB of RAW files

    31. Nikographer [Jon] (56 months ago | reply)

I still have somewhere around 600 or 700 GBs of Jpgs and (some) RAW files on my HDDs. Plus I have everything on DVD backups. I needed to make room for the 20-25 MB files the secret new camera produces...

My grandparents were married on the front steps in 1923. My great uncle was the lighthouse keeper there in the 40s. This is lighthouse is very near and dear to my heart and I have photographed it many times but never captured it as you have. Very beautiful photograph.
