      very well done, great shot. I've tried taken pictures of herons but they always fly away before I can get close enough! Easily spooked bird, how big is your zoom?

      400mm. Part of the game of approaching them is to move really slowly, and don't always maintain eye contact with them. These heron are not as skitish as others I've seen as well, so that helps. They also follow something of a pattern as they work the lake and sometimes I get lucky and plant myself where they are headed before the know they're heading there.
