Red-Shouldered Hawk in Maryland

    Red-Shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus.

Another from the series at work when I saw this guy on Feb 14th 2006 (pics)! He took off a minute later and flew right at me for a few seconds, and I thought to myself, do I need to duck? LOL.

I haven't seen this one much lately, but might have got a lead on the general area of its nest... I looked some but couldn't find it.

great shot...look at those wings and tail. If he was coming straight at me, I'd duck! ;-)

We see those on occassion down here but not in urban settings.
Yours is a dumpster diver apparently. You'll see him again...good and easy pickins in dumpsters.
We had Franklin gulls hanging around a Long John Silver's Seafood restuarant here in Ohio. It was unusual and ironic.

Heh, yeah, this one tries all kinds of tricks. There were crows messing around here, when the Hawk took over the spot the crows left.

I've also seen this guy (or one just like him around my work) in a nearby tree that happens to be above a dumpster. On one of these spottings, I saw it flying away with a mouse!

And a third location was on a powerline, above a sausage-cart/roach-coach, and I think it uses the truck's waste as bait for some live prey...

If it were as easy as tossing some salami on the ground and waiting for him... Hey wait... I've just gotten an idea! LOL, thought of using bait before, but never went that far, lol.

Is it the hawk or the sign in the back ground that's saying "no trespassing"?

      LOL.

BTW, I was about 80 feet away, and the bird never really got comfortable with me. None of my spottings of it (over 6 or 7) I consider this guy very skittish. The 2 Red-Shouldered Hawks at the zoo aren't afraid of visitors, and while they keep an eye out, they just do their thing...

      Good capture.
My neighborhood hawks are the same way... at least one of them is.... very skittish. The other one lets me approach closer if I'm v e r y s l o w.
