Il nome Doraemon deriva da nora neko (のら猫), che in giapponese significa "gatto vagabondo", con l'aggiunta del suffisso -emon, tipico di alcuni nomi tradizionali giapponesi.
Doraemon è uno dei personaggi più celebri in assoluto dell'animazione giapponese, tanto da essere stato nominato nel 2008 "ambasciatore degli anime" nel mondo dal Ministro degli Esteri giapponese Masahiko Komura per promuovere la cultura e l'industria dell'animazione fuori dal Giappone
