WVU started as a Venture Scout Unit in 1967, and from 2002 it changed its name to Woodseats Scout Unit to adopt to the new sections called Explorer Scouts (for 14-18s) and the Scout Network (18-25) which collectively replaced the Venture Scouting section (14-21).

The Unit is based in Woodseats in the Sheffield Sheaf District in the South Yorkshire County, in the UK.
