Hamish Niven says:
"I find Wendy's 1974 photos of Afghanistan so intriguing, partly because of my recent reading of books by Khaled Hosseini & Christopher Kremmer. Her photos, from thirty odd years ago, have a "pre-digital" depth and complexity, that is so evident in every frame. She obviously knows how to work a "real camera", and has scanned them to computer/flickr to great effect. The slide show of these pictures is very worthwhile.
I am particularly taken with the image in the "Bamiyan Tea Shop". The figure on the far left is one that Vermeer might have considered painting, the next is certainly one for Carravagio, or perhaps they would have been content with the photograph. It certainly captures an oriental old world exoticism. It is also very moving to see images of the Bamiyan Buddhas before their destruction in 2002 (?).
These pictures are more than just tourist snaps, of which there are evidently too many, they are vivid vintage images of Afghanistan taken with great care and sensitivity."11th December, 2007
