Weather Projection : synchronous social sunlight

CALL FOR COLLABORATION

This is a call for recent (or imminent) time-lapse imagery of global sunrises from all across the Americas. It’s a call to all those who find beauty not only in the different way the sun rises each day and in each new place around the world, but in the way we share information about what we photograph.

The imagery will be projected every night as part of the new lighting festival, Smart Light Sydney, opening next week on Tuesday 26th May and running for 3 weeks. Your imagery will reveal in real-time what the other side of the awakening world looks like as Sydney sinks into darkness. Its transmission reveals not only how we are all reliant on this monumental symbol of hope and source of energy, but also how we are connected to each other in our fascination for the fluctuations and atmospherics of its daily metamorphosis.

We are asking people from anywhere on mainland North and South America - or at sea to the east of South America, or immediately west of the Americas – all the areas where the sun rises in real time during the duration of the installation – to upload a substantial sequence of interval photography centred on the rising sun. The camera would ideally employ either an ultra-wide-angle fish-eye lens or a long telephoto lens, though other imagery is also welcomed.

At 18.00 on Tuesday 26th May, Weather Projection will commence transmission of the rest of the world.
Your imagery will be played back on a prominent central outdoor location overlooking the entire city and will be duly credited with a subtitle. A website will announce the precise daily ‘screening time’ (i.e. time of local sunrise) for each person’s work in sequence, refreshing daily with a webcam relaying the local experience of distant locations. Your imagery will thus be relayed both to the city of Sydney and to the world at large at exactly the time that the sun rises in the location in which it was taken.

The installation is one of the major international projects for Smart Light Sydney. Smart Light Sydney is a celebration of innovation through light art, music and ideas events, happening across Sydney 26 May – 14 June. Smart Light Sydney is part of Vivid Sydney - the biggest international music and light festival in the Southern Hemisphere.

The project had a generous preview as the main representative of the festival in a large spread on page 3 of the Sydney Morning Herald, one of the major national newspapers. The initial media launch was extensively covered in the media. New Tang Dynasty TV broadcast their coverage to the entire world via 4 satellites, as well as to Sydney through free to air channel 31(TVS). The organisers anticipate 300,000 visitors – not counting any online presence.
